Cyber Safety For Kids Is A Shared Responsibility

Dear Parents,

We often meet parents who are at a lost for how to keep their kids safe online.  They want to take action, but often don't quite know the right action to take.

As Parents, Why Should Cyber Safety For Kids Be A Concern?

Well, if we take a step back and look at it.  We see the large shift that has happened with the introduction of smart phones, social media, and various tablet technologies.

This is because our kids are using these devices in a multitude of ways: to socialize, to research, to do homework, to talk to us, to talk to their friends, to play games, and to watch movies/shows as well as to listen to music.

With all of these multiple uses, we are at a bit of a loss to truly "control" what our sons or daughters are doing.  And yes, we can talk to them about what they are doing, but according to recent stats, 70% of teens hide online behavior from parents.

So What's A Mom Or Dad To Do?

Mom and Dad, we want you to recognize that cyber safety for kids is a shared responsibility. You have to become actively engaged in having conversations with your kids on what they are doing online.

You have to treat internet behavior much like you treated "stranger danger" conversations when they were younger.

You have to talk through cyber security issues much like you will (or do) talk to your kids about the rules involved with driving a vehicle.

Cyber Safety For Kids Begins With You Having The Courage To Begin The Conversation

You were placed in your child's life to protect him or her.  You are there to keep your child safe in the midst of a dangerous society: both online and off.

While it may seem a bit intimidating at first, start your cyber security conversations today.  Begin by talking (and listening) to the views that your kids have on internet safety and security.

5 Technology Life Skills That Will Keep Your Mind Fresh And Invigorated

Dear Parents,

We meet so many parents who tell us their feelings of feeling overwhelmed and dumbfounded when it comes to technology.

And yes, all of the new bells and whistles can make you want to loose your mind.  But don't. Below are five simple tips that will help your mind stay (and remain) sharp and fresh when it comes to technology.

  1. Challenge yourself to find apps, online courses, or technological devices that keep your mind fresh and invigorated.
  2. Use technology to find an app or site that allows your gift or creativity to shine.
  3. Find a way to use apps or technology to make someone else life better or richer.
  4. Connect to others online who share your passion, gifts or interests.
  5. Find apps and sites that make your parent-child bond stronger, and that gives you and your family something to do.

3 Tips To Help Your Child Use Technology In An Innovative Savvy Future-Thinking Way

Dear Parent(s),

Yes, we admit it. Staying aware of your child's technological habits can seem overwhelming and daunting, which is why we encourage you to begin having conversations with your child to bring awareness to them on how to use their smartphones, ipads and devices and technology in an innovative, and savvy thinking, future-focused manner.

Tip One:  Encourage Your Kids To Use Technology To SuperCharge Their Natural Gifts/Interests

As your kids are interacting with their cell phone and technology, make sure you encourage them to use the technology to do something more than just play games.

  • If you have a budding artist, then chat with your child to explore ways to help your child to plug into those apps that will allow their artistic super-power to come alive.

  • If you have a budding engineer, fashionista, or photographer, then encourage them to find those apps that will give them hands-on opportunities.

Tip Two:  Encourage Your Kids To Use Technology To Research Their Future Career Choice

The land of careers is evolving quickly.  While we don't always know which jobs will be created in the next 20 years, we do know that creative, and innovative and savvy thinking problem solvers will be in hot demand as teams of people from all over the globe unit to solve tomorrow's pressing problems.

Tip Three:  Encourage Your Kids To Use Technology To Research Other Cultures

As the world shifts and become more global in nature, your kids will need to have a global-citizen mindset.  They will need to understand that the world is indeed bigger then their local community.  Encourage them to use technology to get to familiar with varying cultures and mindsets that exists in communities on the other side of the globe.
